[Feature Request] auto-update

Post by pietpeuk »

I install windows 7 at computers of home-users on a regular basis.
Most of them don't know anything about computers.
Most of the time they have no idea what the difference is between a browser, a website or the internet.
So downloading and updating Slimjet is a chore I cannot burden them with.
Even the question "updating yes or no" is too much!
"Updating what? Why are you harassing me with questions, while I have no idea about the consequences? Leave me alone and just do what I want you to do!"
And they will always choose "no", because people are inclined to choose the default, when they don't know.
That's why I still install google chrome with it's automatic updating with tasks scheduler, which works perfectly, although I would prefer to install Slimjet ten times over.
Offcourse I understand why Slimjet doesn't like that kind of updating.
I turn of all automatic updating (of anything) as well and prefer to download and install by hand.
So I am not asking for a change in Slimjet, but maybe the authors could create the possibility of some kind of Scheduled Task, that will do automatic updating of Slimjet without the user knowing anything.
Only then I can install Slimjet on the computers of ignorant people.

Thanks for hearing me out :)

BTW I think "ignorant" in the english language has a bit of a negative tone to it, but that is not how it is intended.
I mean it just like "no or little knowledge about computers"

or if anything, an option to perform a fully automated update.

I for one (well, two since you said same :D ) would never want anything updated automatically and go out of my way to remove all stealth auto-update features.

Maybe for how your customers would use Slimjet (or any browser), it would not even matter if they updated, anyway...since you mentioned they are noobies.

I do similar when I set up laptops for sale and a few yesrs ago used to use Chromeplus/Coolnovo (I think died at version 28 or so) and my customers still use it fine for what they do (as you noted, simple).

So maybe load Slimjet and just not worry about it, turn off the update notification!

(I use the word 'noobies' instead of 'ignorant' or "no or little knowledge about computers") :D

average users / power users. Automating updates should be enabled and default for average users, then the option to disable it for power users. To do this though I think you need a stable version and a beta version for testing (power users). You can see the problems it would cause your non tech average user if the automated update gives them a bug riddled version of slimjet because it has not been tested.

Jeff: Obviously, I think an updating Chrome is better than a non-updating Slimjet.
Dev: about the chance of getting an bug-riddled update: I guess that chance exists with Chrome just the same.

Chrome is a very good and safe browser, but Slimjet is Chrome the way we want it.
I have never been so easily convinced to change browser as with Slimjet.
But I am also convinced that Slimjet can never have a huge customer-base, as long as it has no automatic update without questions.
The majority of people are just not capable of downloading and installing an update, however trivial that seems to us.

If that is the case, you would think I would have received SOME comments about such from at least a few of my hundreds of customers! But we all have our opinions (about everything) and that's what makes it fun to discuss. My dad said "if 2 people agree on everything, one of them is not needed". :D

Of course you do what's needed to keep yourself and your customers happy!

ps - and I think having such an option (to select or not) is fine....I like to have full flexibility too...

What does chrome have to do with a on/off option for automated updates in slimjet (you get that option in chrome itself don't forget)? You can get bug riddled updates for any software that's why most companies including google have a stable version and a beta version the big difference is that slimjet/flashpeak has a low user base so it cannot really afford to lose many due to bugs.

Slimjet as you say is a good chromium based alternate browser but it does have a few major flaws at the moment, lack of a native media player, automated updates etc but its early days yet and I'm sure the devs will continue to resolve these issues. Its never going to be as big as other browser because your average joe's just stick with what they know :)

yup, agreed, that's why I never get complaints about Coolnovo from the past (now I install Slimjet) and as noted, it died at like version 28 or so!! :D

Still use coolnovo when slimjet doesn't do what it should do and even tho its outdated its by far been the best chromium based browser I've used. Slimjet is getting there tho :)

I'm not an average user, but am lazy, so this would be great to add. Especially for portable users that are on slow connections, wire or wireless. All I or we want is an option, thanks. :)

I definitely wouldn't want automatic updates, but perhaps the option could be there for those that want it.

However I do think the update process, once started, should be automatic - having to download a setup file first, and then go to it to start the update, is likely to be confusing for less experienced users, and may well put them off using the browser.
