7.0.3 rendering Yahoo home page incorrectly (unusable)?

Post by highstream »

Yahoo or Slimjet, I don't know, but with 7.0.3.0 Yahoo's home page is being rendered in a format that was supposedly discarded sometime back because it uses a lot more vertical room, adds a lot of clutter and is very different than other browsers, including Chromium based Vivaldi and Opera. It's also taken the *essential* and widely popular MyYahoo link off the main screen (usually upper right) and stuck it behind a secondary list ("More on Yahoo" on left). And on the MyYahoo page, the font size is reduced considerably (Portfolio), making it difficult to read. Yahoo messed with the home page awhile back - they tried something like this whole design - and then abandoned it after a ton of protests. Compare the attached screenshots and the differences between Slimjet and the rest of the browsers will be apparent. Slimjet font size is set to 15, but that doesn't seem to be the problem here. Is this Slimjet or Yahoo? Any fixes? Thanks,

To me it looks clearer in slimjet going by your pics but Is your adblocker removing anything like my yahoo icon ? or the reverse adblocker working in other browser but not blocking elements in slimjet. Has one got a custom setup as you can do that on the yahoo page and its not showing your custom page in slimjet ?

No custom setups with any of my browsers except one, and it's not caused by ad blocking. I tested the latter, plus I'm using the same ad blocking in all my browsers. The issue is not about clarity as you perhaps see it, but about overall layout: what's included, what's not, where it's put or not, and how the screen space is used. The version you see in the Slimjet screenshot drew enormous protests from Yahoo users when it was introduced a few months ago, so Yahoo backed off within two or three weeks and went back to the version in the Vivaldi screenshot (same as my other four browsers - IE11, FF, Opera 12/35). I'm not saying the latter is great - it's the result of unpopular changes Yahoo made in January 2015 - but it's workable in a way that what's showing in Slimjet 7.0.3.0 version isn't.

To be clear, Yahoo with 7.0.2.0 looked like the Vivaldi screenshot. My question is, was this just a Slimjet/Yahoo change coincidence or is there something about the changes in 7.0.3.0 that is causing it? Yahoo sometimes does experiments with one or two browsers to gauge customer reactions, and maybe Slimjet was the lucky loser.

I don't think its slimjet i think its your adblocker as it looks like its blocking in the one browser but not in your other browser (you can see the red icon of ublock but not in the other picture its blank with no indications of any blocking ). Also is that page in Vivaldi zoomed in ? It might just be a rendering issue i suppose

No, it seems to be some interaction between Yahoo and Slimjet's and Google's login systems (and people with >1 Google usernames). You've created a monster. See my post momentarily under the uBlock Origin 2016 extension problem for a fuller discussion.

It seems to switch back and forth. Most of the evening it's been the same as the other browsers, but now it's back to what I showed in the first screenshot. Here's what I saw (logged out, but "highstream" still showing up top):

- open Slimjet, Yahoo.com looks like the other browsers
- open Settings, close Settings
- click on Home, Yahoo.com looks like the first screenshot again

Since this didn't happen before 7.0.3.0, wouldn't that suggest it's something about this build that's different with Yahoo?

It's Yahoo, not Slimjet. Yahoo decided to switch their home page once again - and it's rightly drawing howls of protest. SJ must have gotten it first, now other browsers have.

I really like the new Yahoo. So put me in the minority I guess.
