Side By Side Error Cause and Fix Found!!!

Post by doctorwizz »

After hours of testing, I found a way to create and fix the side by side errors.
I used the 64bit portable SJ v44.0.3.0 for these tests. This might work with any version that has a SBS error. I didn't test earlier versions.
I don't know if the 32bit has errors.

To easily create the this error, you a fresh boot.

Open your SlimJet folder and look for: 126.0.6478.17.manifest, Earlier versions have a different file name. In SJ ver 43.0.70, that file is named 122.0.6261.39.manifest. I guess it's the Chrome version.
EDIT 10/12/2024: If that file is already missing, grab a portable SJ and unpack it and put that manifest file into your SJ folder.

Move that file somewhere.

Run SlimJet. You will get the S by S error. Move that .manifest back into the SJ folder. SJ will open normally.
It will still open every time. Even if you move it out again.
After a reboot, SJ will error again. It must stay in memory or something.
Then put that manifest back into the SJ folder and it works without error.

If you already have the SBS error. Grab a portable SJ and unpack it and put that manifest file into your SJ folder. It should work normally again.

Somehow this manifest gets deleted sometimes. Mabe anti virus deletes. I don't know. But I noticed it missing today after using SJ for many hours last night.

EDIT This is a temporary fix. So if the maifest gets deleted again, put it back. Keep that copy of that file somewhere.

I need testers to test this please. It's easy to do. Please report back. I need to make a bug report.

Maybe changing the permission's on that file would prevent from getting deleted?

I changed the Administrator permissions to Deny Full Control. I think that will work. I can't delete it. I can change it back when necessary.

Well that deny full control is bad. Got a side by side error after the PC was off for while.
I tried to restore permissions. Still got errors.
Deleted it and put a new copy of the manifest and it works again. Default permissions came back.

The question is:
Why don't the developers fix this issue once and forever?!?
This error appears frequently in almost every next version.

Setting the manifest file to "Read Only" works. It does not get deleted anymore.
Bug report was filed.

Thank you for that good advice - I am using SJ Portable.
And almost after every automatic update there is the same problem -
this side-by-side Error.

Have now copied that manifest file 126.0.6478.17.manifest
back to SJ 44 Folder and set the manifest file to - Read Only.

SJ 44 64bit - Works again! :)
