Where are they stored? Or are the just refreshed on the fly every time?

on Mac: the following file
${user.home}/Library/Application Support/Google/Slimjet/Default/Favicons
on Windows: Favicons-journal and Favicons files from the following location
C:\Users\[YOUR USER NAME]\AppData\Local\Google\Slimjet\User Data\Default
