46.0.1.0 - 'Alias' Search Engines broken

Post by viceroys »

Hello,

I couldn't find a topic for this issue and I'm not even sure if this is by design or a bug (the latter I hope), so please forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong section, but since updating to 46.0.1.0 today, all of my "static" (not using %s) search engines stopped working. Those which do use %s in the url work just fine.

Background: I used to create some search engine shortcuts to access some of the Slimjet configuration pages, eg:

e (extensions) -> slimjet: //extensions
c (cookies) -> slimjet: //settings/content/all?search=cookies
s (settings) -> slimjet: //settings

(I had to add a space to the URLs, otherwise I couldn't post...)

In practice - I open a new tab, type in 'c', hit enter and I'm in the cookies section where I can browse and delete cookies, same for extensions if I quickly want to disable uBlock and so on. Useful for me, I've had these shortcuts for years now, everything worked perfectly with 45.0.3.0 and all previous versions. Stopped working with 46.0.1.0.

Right now none of the 'static' engines work and if I go to Search Engine Settings, try to edit one of my 'static' engines and clicking on the URL, I get a notification saying my URL is not valid and the 'Save' button is grayed out. (Sadly as a new user I can't paste links to image hosting sites and I don't see an option to attach files). If I put in '%s' into the Url, it gets marked as valid and I can save it, but of course the url will be broken and won't work.

I hope my description is understandable.

Could the old behaviour for such 'static' search engines be brought back or is there a new way I should create such shortcuts?

Please let me know if you need more information.

Thank you in advance for any help.

I believe you are referring to the Set Alias feature. The major upgrade may have revisited how this is handled and reset Aliases. Go into settings and use the search bar at the top for "Alias". Mess around there.

Mostly my replies are about Windows OS. If not I try to remember to specify Linux.

Hi, the Aliases did the trick, thank you so much.

I think this is a Chromium change in general, as on Edge I also noticed that I'm forced to use '%s' on Search Engines.

Problem solved, topic can be closed.
