I messed around with it a bit.
Looks like anytime you are dealing with Bookmarks, except for the sidebar, if a single column list of bookmarks will extend beyond the bottom of your screen, it will start another column of bookmarks, so you can see all of them listed at the same time.

I, for one, prefer seeing all of my bookmarks at the same time in multiple columns.

I have to admit that it's more convenient to have the favorites spread out over several columns than to see my favorites on a long and seemingly endless column!
