How to install an extension from a file ?

How can an extension be installed from a file ? I see no way to do it with SlimJet.

There is an extension called GetCRX which can enable you to get a .crx file from its page on the Chrome Web Store site. You can use that .crx file to install the extension by dragging it and dropping it on the extensions page of the browser.

Thanks, but I forgot to mention that I want to install an extension made for Firefox, not chrome.
My understanding, from reading about it, is that they both have the same coding etc. so they should be interchangeable.
Would the solution you mentioned do the same thing with FF extensions ?
