more than 8 search engines

I want to have more than 8 search engines in the drop down list of the separate search field. How can I do this? If I add a new search engine as standard, another search engine disappears from the list.

I think this is a hard limit that cannot be exceeded.

This article is a couple years old but I think the information is still applicable. Some Websites mentioned may no longer exist but no doubt they have been replaced with others.
