Update Notification Not Working

For several version updates going back to 7.xx, Slimjet on my older Vista laptop is reluctant to notify me of new updates. I've fiddled with the update settings to try and jog it into working but that didn't help. I end up having to manually request an update check just about every day to stay current.

Currently and most of the time I have it set to check daily and notify of beta.
