Tab options

-Would it be possible to introduce an option (or is there a hack currently short of an extension) to make it so that the close button is displayed but only on the current tab (or a tab you're hovering over)? This is a real space-saver.
-Where a new tab opens is quite confusing and inconsistent, especially if you always want tabs to open adjacent to the current tab, but this is hardly limited to Slimjet. For example (these are all with the option to place new tabs from an existing tab at the end of all tabs *disabled*):
Does open an adjacent tab:
1) Right-clicking your current tab and clicking "New Tab"
2) Right-clicking a link and choosing "Open link in new tab"
2) Middle-clicking a link
Does not open an adjacent tab:
1) The hotkey equivalent of #1 above (Ctrl-T). I've never seen a hotkey action result in something different, but this does.
2) Clicking the "+" on the tab row
3) Using the new-tab mouse gesture
