Summary: It's too easy to block 3rd party cookies, and other browsers are doing it by default, so Google will introduce new cutting edge methods of privacy violation for themselves but not competitors.

OK a little editorializing there. Technical details at link.

Note: You already can block 3rd party cookies in Chrome (and Slimjet), but must do so explicitly in the settings.
