What's with rendering NASA's picture archive?

Post by Passenger »

My OS is Windows 7
I have Slimjet 24.0.6.0 (latest and greatest as of this posting) with NoScript extension.

This page ==> https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html
This is just a list of dates and links to pictures with no fancy navigation.

I have nasa.gov 100% whitelisted for the Slimjet ad blocker and for NoScript.

The rest of the nasa.gov site works fine, but on that page it freezes.
And it didn't used to freeze with previous versions of Slimjet before a certain point.

When I go to that page they have added this text to the heading:
Note: Some versions of Chrome are having trouble pre-fetching the links on this page and freezing.
So I know the problem is not Slimjet as such.
But if I had some insight into exactly what is going on, perhaps I could design a work-around (if no one beats me to it) and share it.

I already tried turning off "Preload pages for faster browsing and searching" and it doesn't help.

Thank you.

That page hangs with Vivaldi (another Chromium browser), also. It does work with SeaMonkey, Pale Moon, and Safari.

So what exactly did chrome recently change and what about the page is hanging?

I analyzed the source a little bit but noting pops out at me.

No idea. It might be something about the rendering engine of the browser.

Clarification: The real question is what changed in the rendering engine that recently broke the page?

Viewing source on the page all the links work, so it's not a problem with the links.

You guys got me curious so I checked and oddly in SlimJet it seems to be fine for me but it did sort of hang/not respond for a few seconds when using PaleMoon portable. (Latest versions of both browsers).

Slimjet update this morning.

Problem still not 100% fixed, but NASA has split its archive page in a way that ameliorates the problem for more recent links.

Also, I see from here ...

https://www.slimjet.com/en/whatisnew.php

... that the next Slimjet will have a newer version of Chromium.
