DNS lookup/ internet connection/ secure connection

I am using Zorin 12 Ultimate which is based on Ubuntu 16.04 version of Linux.
I am using Slimjet as my main browser, but find its response is far slower that on my old Zorin 9 (Ubuntu14.04) laptop.
I often get various indications whilst I wait:
"DNS lookup" slow, "no internet connection" when my laptop Settings>network is shown to be working (blue) and slow "esablishing a secure connection"
No other home devices i-pad, internet TV etc. are having problems with my BT Home Hub 5 router (UK).
Internet search reveals things like stopping using the system proxy or editing the by the command line OR that one has to edit /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head by command line editing.
I think it is really a Ubuntu 16.04 issue but any detailed, proven solution would be welcome from anyone who has solved this issue using Ubuntu 16.04.
