The translator can be is pretty crappy. The main problem is that it doesn't always translate automatically, and when this happens the translator icon doesn't even appear. Most frustratingly this happens withing a website.
I assume it fails for a reason, which is not easy to fix, but a useful workaround would be to always show the translator icon, to access translation settings.
Also the context menu item that shows translate page to <language> could be changed to show my chosen language for the translator and not the gui language. Or better yet add it as a second option. It's most stupid that this is lacking.
My GUI and target differ of course because google translate is worthless if you neither the source or the target language is english. (It double translate to english and then to the target language, resulting in an incomprehensible mess...)
