I'm having the exact same issue. The problem began when I upgraded to v. 39, so I reverted back to v.38 in hopes that the issue will be resolved.

I wanted to thank everyone for all of the assistance. As was suggested, I installed the new beta (34.0.1.0); first the portable to test, then the full install and the strange tab issue I was having has been resolved.

I did restart SJ after disabling the extensions and made sure that the persistent background option was unchecked and still got the same result. Since it seems that the author can't reproduce the issue, there has to be something wrong with my profile for google sync that may be causing the issue.

I don't have the CrxMouse Chrome™ Gestures 5.0.1 extension installed, so there has to be at least one other cause of this issue. On my system, this bug persists with all extensions disabled and with a reset of preferences to default. Any suggestions?
