Chromium is an open source web browser project on which Google Chrome is based. It also serves as the basis for many other browsers such as Slimjet, Comodo Dragon, 7 Star browser, CoolNovo, etc. Just like Google Chrome, Chromium has a simple minimalistic interface and fast rendering engine called Blink. Blink engine was a fork by Google from the original community-maintained webkit engine.
The key difference between Chromium and Google Chrome is that Chromium is 100% open source and doesn' transmit usage statistics back to Google's servers. Some users who want to have best protection for their privacy will choose Chromium over Google Chrome. Another key difference between Chromium and Chrome is the availability of proprietary codecs, most notabley, the H.264 code and AAC codec, which is required to decode a MP4 video. The priprietary codes are only shipped with Chrome and not available in Chromium. Some browsers such as Slimjet have worked around this issue by calling the codecs available in the operating system.
Chromium browser is compatible with all the extensions designed for Google Chrome.
