Looks like it was slimjet - or more precisely, the install. I saved the user profiles, then uninstalled SJ. I then deleted the user account SJ hierarchy and the remnants in the SJ folder (under /opt in linux). Then I installed SJ. Created a new slimjet folder under the user account, and pasted back ...

Here's a shot in real time, of twitter, in maxthon (in back and above) and slimjet concurrently. Both on my linux lite (debian x64) box.

Twitter.com pulls no error there, but I wouldn't think it would since no other browser is complaining about it.

Here's another instance that just happened. All day long, no problem with twitter. Suddenly, a https error:
Maxthon, Vivaldi have no problem with the site.
You see SJ is claiming the site's certs are inadequate.
The error occurs in another SJ user profile as well.

I had a corrupted user profile, apparently it was the config file, and replaced virtually the whole thing a week ago. So certs and cookies should be new. This problem predates that.

Thanks. I hadn't thought about that, but the machine's clock turns out to be perfect. And that probably wouldn't explain the site not throwing an error a bit later on.

I have been getting increasingly bad video performance on XP machines, using either html5 or flash, so bad that I sent the owner back to IE8 for watching youtube. So the continuation of support for xp might be academic.
